Laser stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”; in other words, a high technology device that generates a beam of light that produces energy. This energy has specific properties, interacting with the irradiated tissue to produce therapeutic effects. At Zamora Dental Centre, the laser is one of the instruments we have used routinely since introducing the first model ten years ago.
This is especially useful in small-scale surgery on children, such as for frenectomies (removing an aberrant lingual or labial frenum), since there is no bleeding or need for stitches - meaning the treatment is more acceptable to our youngest patients. Laser treatment sterilises the area where it is used, seals the blood vessels and reduces secondary effects and damage of adjacent tissue.
